One of my co-workers put a bug in my ear about it, so finally this week I bought some cans of plain sardines packed in oil. I opened the can, splashed in a tablespoon or two of Louisiana hot sauce and... wow. Good stuff!
Was it Tabasco? I ask because experience has taught me that Tabasco goes oh-so-well with any number of things you'd never expect, such as shrimp gumbo and peanutbutter on toast.
Tabasco goes well with a lot of things, yes. This was President's Choice Louisiana-style hot sauce, though. Very yummy stuff, though a bit weak in terms of bite.
In past I have always gone to great lengths to pick out the bones (especially the spine) when eating tinned sardines, but this morning I just popped the lid, poured over the hot sauce and dug in.
There were a couple of bites where I caught a bit of crunchy spine material, but it was well within my squick tolerance so I think I won't bother dissecting the fish in future.
Kipper Snacks (the plain ones, not the tomato sauce ones :P ) are my favorite. I pour off the water and oil and nibble as-is or put in a good dash of Frank's Louisiana Hot Sauce (the power behind many commercial "buffalo chicken" recipes). It's a great snack to put in your day pack for woods treks...just remember a ziplock for the fishy cans so you (and anyone you happen to be with) can stand packing them out. :)
