Seniority

The new seniority list came out today and - though it no longer affects me - I have moved to the upper portion of the list.  That's not entirely unexpected, given that I have been working here for almost 20 years.

What a depressing landmark that is.

[Edit: When I say it's depressing, it's because this is not what I had envisioned for myself 20 years ago. I'm not doing badly, per se, but I have never felt that I lived up to my potential.]

Wow. I can't imagine ever working somewhere that long.

Then again, I'm not exactly the "responsible, hard working" type either.

Okay, I'll bite

Why does your employer publish a "seniority list"?

So I'm not supposed to be proud of having worked here for over 18 years?

This was a summer job. =)

This is a union shop. Even though I got promoted a few years ago, I've been keeping up my union dues as a contingency. I don't expect to get sent back to the ranks, but it's happened to others. By keeping my position in the seniority chart I can ensure that at least I wouldn't get stuck on a midnight job with Tue/Fri off if I ever got demoted back to the union.

I didn't expect to be working here this long to be honest. My big plan when I hired on was to work for the summer and save up enough to finish my university.

One of the problems with a steady paycheque is that it removes the motivation to better yourself, so almost 20 years later, here I (still) am. I admit that I could have done a lot worse for myself, but I'd set my sights a lot higher and never lived up to what I thought I could be.

Well...it's not like you're dead yet. (Unless you've become a zombie and aren't telling anyone)

I might have worked longer at one place if the option was there or if I could actually stand the place.

I figured it was probably where you were that was triggering the disappointment, but I thought I'd check.

I know. I often torture myself with the "what if?" scenario. You and I could have done much worse, on the other hand.
Good you kept your union dues up. I'm on the first page myself.
I had my 25th anniversary a month ago.
