Seniority

The new seniority list came out today and - though it no longer affects me - I have moved to the upper portion of the list.  That's not entirely unexpected, given that I have been working here for almost 20 years.

What a depressing landmark that is.

[Edit: When I say it's depressing, it's because this is not what I had envisioned for myself 20 years ago. I'm not doing badly, per se, but I have never felt that I lived up to my potential.]

Why does your employer publish a "seniority list"?

This is a union shop. Even though I got promoted a few years ago, I've been keeping up my union dues as a contingency. I don't expect to get sent back to the ranks, but it's happened to others. By keeping my position in the seniority chart I can ensure that at least I wouldn't get stuck on a midnight job with Tue/Fri off if I ever got demoted back to the union.
