plonq: (Angsty Mood)
Saturday:

We returned to Mondragon again for our weekly coffee meet after skipping it last week in favour of brunch at Furgeta's place.  At first it looked like it was going to be a very light turnout, but people arrived one and two at a time until we had about a dozen at the meet.  [livejournal.com profile] siyahamba was the first to arrive, and he gave me a shirt that he'd picked up down in Detroit.  It's a really nice shirt with jaguars on it, and totally unexpected.  Thanks again *hug*.

After the meet we went to the zoo to check out the white tigers ([livejournal.com profile] atara or I may post some pictures/movies of them later).  One of the tigers was having a great time chasing kids around the enclosure.  Perhaps I should elaborate that the kids were outside the enclosure and she was on the inside chasing them as they ran around.  I don't know if she was just playing, or regarding them as potential hors douvres, but it was fun to watch either way.  An evil little voice in the back of my mind wondered what she would have done if she'd caught one of them.

Sunday:

I neglected my chores in order to play Neverwinter Nights with [livejournal.com profile] boinggoat.  Everything went well until the end of the evening when the game died at a flaky part of the module, and then  - almost as an afterthought - my 40G IBM Deskstar died along with it.  I am not impressed.  This is my "unimpressed" face that I'm wearing right now.  While it wasn't as cataclysmic a loss as it was when the first Deskstar died, I still lost a lot of data.

I would like to say for the record that the IBM Deskstar is the worst piece of crap on the market.  I will not now, nor ever recommend it to anyone.  If I send this one back for another warranty replacement then it will be the third in as many years.  It is worth noting that my 9-year-old Maxtor, and 7-year-old Western Digital drives are still going strong.

I know I said something like that in my previous post, but I wanted to emphasize the point.

Plonq rates them with two thumbs way down, followed by two middle fingers straight up.

I'm told the newer drives from IBM are more reliable, but at this point I wouldn't trust my data to a Deathstar... er, Deskstar.
