I know I said something like that in my previous post, but I wanted to emphasize the point.

Plonq rates them with two thumbs way down, followed by two middle fingers straight up.

I'm told the newer drives from IBM are more reliable, but at this point I wouldn't trust my data to a Deathstar... er, Deskstar.

Really? I've been using a Deskstar IDE in the Beige Bitch for about 4 years now. A Travelstar in my Powerbook for 4. I've got an older IBM SCSI drive that worked full time for 4 years and now part time as an external drive. Never had a problem!

I would never buy a Western Digital, but from what I can tell.. everything else is nearly equal.

Every drive I've ever seen that failed spectacularly has been a western Digital.
One exception was my Maxtor that recently ate it. But I'd had that drive for must be about 4 years? It was 33.3 gig and that was almost as big as they got when I bought it.

Speaking from my days as a PC tech at Best Buy (circa 1997) I have only two words: Quantum Bigfoot.

Worst. Drive. Ever.
