The plan for the first half of our day was pretty much set. We were going to head out for some inexpensive breakfast, pick up a new cartridge for our printer, and if the weather held up we were going to walk over to the bike shop and pick up my new bike. It's a good 45-minute walk, but we've been looking for an excuse to get more exercise.

And then this happened.
Ouch! )

Anyway, we altered our plans a bit, and [livejournal.com profile] atara drove us over to the bike shop instead so that I could get the bike. By the time I was about five blocks from the shop I concluded that the seat was slightly too low for me, and the tires were a bit under-inflated. There was a pretty good layer of dust on the bike when I bought it, so I suspect that it was in the showroom long enough to have lost some air. It almost felt like riding through soft sand all the way home, and by the time I arrived at the house my legs felt like rubber. I was ready to call it a day, but [livejournal.com profile] atara wanted to haul out her bike and go riding together. I couldn't say "no" once she turned on those puppy-dog eyes.

We adjusted the seat, and I topped up the tires, then we mounted up and rode down to Safeway for Milk. It was a much easier ride, and by the time we were on our way home my legs were feeling full of energy again. I could probably have handled a loop of the park and back, but we needed to start getting ready for [livejournal.com profile] atara's graduation party over at [livejournal.com profile] pierrekrahn's place this afternoon.

I feel good about this bike. It's a nice ride. I have a hunch the two of us are going to get in a lot more riding this summer than we did last.

Finally, I'll leave you with a video appropriate to the date. The lyrics are slightly NSFW (depending on where you work).

I don't think it's broken, but it still hurts like hell.

I stubbed one my toe while I was bustling around in the kitchen, packing a lunch this morning. I had just cut the top off a package of processed chicken and was scurrying over to the garbage can with the plastic bits when the small toe of my left foot experienced simultaneous applications of inertia and momentum in a happenstance meeting with a shoe. If I could have filmed the meeting and replayed it in slow motion, it would probably be interesting from an academic viewpoint to watch the little toe twist and contort as it became compressed to one third of its usual length.

I admit that I uttered a few profanities as I hopped around and assessed the damage. The impact itself didn't hurt, but the toe is a long way from my head, and it took awhile for some of the straggling messages from its pain sensors to reach my brain. It started with a dull throb, and slowly built to a crescendo of agony, to the extent that I worried that I might have broken it. I don't believe that it's broken, but I think that I probably tore the nail back a bit -- not enough to bleed, but enough to elicit a wince with every step.

... but [livejournal.com profile] atara was not to be outdone. She has not posted about it yet, but once things settle down a bit and she finds herself behind a keyboard, you will likely be treated to a hearty grump about the unfortunate start to her day. Look for the word "cat" to be used as both a noun and a curse.
