Feb. 9th, 2006 08:43 amThis current Windows install has followed me through three different motherboards, but last night I finally managed to kill it entirely. I've managed to make it stop recognizing some of my hardware, and I can make it crash reliably by attempting to use the network. Ironically it was my attempts to fix the networking that caused this meltdown in the first place.
The only upside I can see from this is that I will (with luck) be picking up a new SATA hard drive for the install, and I'll have a virgin copy of Windows to play with when I'm done. I should see a reasonable speed increase on my computer when I'm done.
... then I have to start tracking down install disks and keyfiles and... bleah. I can see how I'll be spending the rest of my week. =(
[Edit: This strip always comes to mind whenever I experience serious computer problems.]

Date: 2006-02-09 03:25 pm (UTC)Wow. That beats any record of mine.
I do have one installation that's about three years old. But that's probably because I almost never boot that box into Windows anymore and haven't for the past two years. (Triple boot system)
My mate typically reinstalls his Win box about one a month. He's got it down to fine art now. But it still can take the better part of a day.
What's really cool about Windows is that you can spend all that time reinstalling only to have it come out borked and barely usable. Then you can format and do exactly the same thing again, and have it turn out completely different.
Better still, every once in awhile everything goes smoothly and things actually end up working the way they're supposed to. When that happens, it's like winning the lottery! :)
Good luck. (loans you a Linux LiveCD)

Date: 2006-02-09 08:58 pm (UTC)I did a "repair" install of it last night, but things were too badly borked. I'm going to do a clean format and install tonight. Wish me luck.

It's a great backup tool, not to mention a nice fashion accessory when worn on a neck strap. :)

Date: 2006-02-09 08:55 pm (UTC)I picked up the replacement drives today. I'm going to be venturing into the world of RAID0 today (what the heck, you only live once, so live dangerously, ey?). =)
