[livejournal.com profile] atara and I picked up Arkham Horror last weekend, and this past Saturday we managed to rope [livejournal.com profile] pierrekrahn and [livejournal.com profile] dronon into a game of it.  Naturally we had not done any preparation work prior to removing the shrink wrap from the game, so it was very slow going for the first couple of turns.

We decided sometime around 2:00 Sunday morning that the game was probably going to drag on a bit, so we agreed to simply summon the elder god and take him (it?) on in final combat - though to be fair, we were well on our way to having all of the gate points sealed by that point.  We gave him a pretty good run, but in the end we all got devoured.

Follow-up to the door sign at work:

The sign stayed up. I have it on hearsay that the CEO was in town, but I saw no evidence of his presence.

We caught the matinĂ©e showing of Pirates of The Caribbean on Friday.  It was a good movie, but not great.  In my opinion it would have benefited from, amongst other things, having 30 minutes of pointless scenes cut from it.  (Without giving away too much of what passed for plot in this movie, think "cannibals" and "water wheel" for two of the scenes that could have been cut.)

Overall it was big on special effects, but small on story.  In the first Pirates movie, the characters were what made it an enjoyable romp for me.  In the second, they were just caricatures for whom I could not garner any sympathy.
Minor spoiler behind a cut. )

Anyway, it's not the best movie I've seen this year, but it's worth seeing on the big screen for the effects.  Just don't expect any good, solid story telling.  I give it 3ish Plonqies out of 5.

The bad news is the wiped repeatedly against the same boss in Naxx. The good news is that we are starting to make progress. Three of the wipes were because the instance bugged on us in the middle of the fight, and on two of those we were doing very well up until it bugged. If we don't get him on the next trip in there, we'll have him shortly after. There will be much cheering when that happens.
