We caught the matinée showing of Pirates of The Caribbean on Friday. It was a good movie, but not great. In my opinion it would have benefited from, amongst other things, having 30 minutes of pointless scenes cut from it. (Without giving away too much of what passed for plot in this movie, think "cannibals" and "water wheel" for two of the scenes that could have been cut.)
Overall it was big on special effects, but small on story. In the first Pirates movie, the characters were what made it an enjoyable romp for me. In the second, they were just caricatures for whom I could not garner any sympathy.
... and what the heck was up with the jar of dirt? The equivalent would be to hand him a gun in scene two and have him lose it in scene 8 without ever using it. Unless the broken jar comes into play somehow in part 3, it renders the whole scene with the seer extraneous in my mind.
Scene: Sparrow visits an old friend for help. She hands him the first thing she lays hands on in the back room. It does him absolutely no good. He later drops it, and it breaks.
Anyway, it's not the best movie I've seen this year, but it's worth seeing on the big screen for the effects. Just don't expect any good, solid story telling. I give it 3ish Plonqies out of 5.
