We just got home from the NIN concert, deaf and satisfied (and in
atara's case, a little hoarse). The night opened with Death From Above 1979 - who put on a pretty good show - and then just got better from there. They were followed up by Queens of The Stone Age, who came out and played a solid 50-minute set. I was impressed. I recognized 4-5 of the songs they played, and liked most of the rest. I'm definitely going to have to check out their work.
After a 30-minute break while they retooled the stage, Trent Reznor and his band came out and hit us with 90 solid minutes of pulsing, strobing, thumping, screaming industrial goodness. This show was strikingly different from the previous concert I'd seen at MTS Centre (Green Day). Reznor does virtually no interaction with the audience, short of a polite "thank you" after many of the songs. He crammed in at least one song from each of his albums, but still managed to cover most of the tracks from With Teeth. I was (mildly) disappointed that he didn't play a couple of my favourites (Sin and The Becoming), but he made up for it by playing a couple of unreleased tracks. I'd heard that he's been writing new material while on tour, but I didn't think that any of it would be ready for prime time yet. Sounds good.
About the extent of his verbal interaction was near the end of the concert, where he said, "Have I ever played here before? I haven't, have I? If I have, then I apologize because I honestly don't remember. I was drunk at the time."
All too true. I think he did play here back in the mid-90s, but he's really cleaned up his act since then.
