We got [livejournal.com profile] atara's car about 10' out of the garage this morning and, with the help of four snow shovels and two neighbours, we managed to back it in again so that we could take the bus.  The ally behind our house is impassible, and the side-streets aren't much better.

And it's supposed to keep coming down for most of today.  At least they have a a few hours to clear streets before we hit the road tomorrow.  I feel bad for the group who were planning to leave today, though.  Truckers coming up Hwy 75 (between here and the border) described the conditions this morning as "treacherous".

You may have to speak up around me today as I'm still a little deaf.

Seriously, I wish them luck. I really hope they don't end up in a ditch on the way because from all reports the roads out of town are subject to near-zero visibility and nigh-impassable conditions.

Well, on the bright side, looking at the road conditions, at least Route 75 is only "snow covered and slippery" as opposed to "impassable" like some of the roads to the north and west. Still, not fun at all. I do hope things clear up some by tomorrow.

For what it's worth, it looks like North Dakota and Minnesota aren't too bad right now, at least.

(Heh. I'd never really looked at the route you have to take. I'll bet that stretch of I-29 is oh-so-exciting. Still, that's an area of the country I've never been to - I'm sure it has beauty of its own.)

"Exciting" hardly begins to describe I-29. I remember reading a news story a few years back about how North Dakota was having a serious problem with discarded bottles of urine along the sides of their highways, apparently tossed out the windows of moving cars and trucks. It seems that people are in such a hurry to get through the state that they'd rather do their business on the move than stop for the few minutes that it would take in one of the (clean and modern) rest stops along the highway.

Having lived next to North Dakota for the past ten years I find this practice both disgusting and totally understandable.

What?

I'll see you at MFF then, if you make it.
Is [livejournal.com profile] dronon going too? He can point me out to you, or help you avoid me. One or the other. ;-)

In theory, he is going. He's part of the group who left this morning.

Whether they arrive is another question. =/
