*blink blink*
Oct. 18th, 2004 07:43 amWhat a way to start a Monday.
I misplaced my jacket last night. I could have used it this morning when it was -8 and windy.
I forgot my pass card at home this morning. They gave me a replacement for the day, and (as usual) the replacement card works much better than my own card. All I have to with this card is wave it in the general direction of the scanner and I can get through. With my card - which is the same as the last two they issued me - I have to physically hold it against the scanner for a couple of seconds and then it sometimes works.
I had barely ensconced myself behind my desk with a coffee when one of the new-hires popped her head in the office and informed me that they hadn't been able to get #39 working after the power outage this weekend. That didn't sound too bad, since that's usually not a critical machine. I assured her that I would take care of it and sent her on her way.
I dragged myself reluctantly out of my comfortable swivel-recliner to have a look. She'd said something about being unable to get the display working on that machine. Let's have a look here. Computer turned on? Check. Monitor turned on? Check. Unplugged keyboard, mouse and VGA cords hanging down in front of the monitor? Check. Wait - what the fuck? That might explain why it's not working. One would think that the presence of unplugged cables hanging over the top and down the front of the monitor would be, oh I dunno, a fucking clue to these people as to what the problem might be?
I pulled the CPU and monitor out of the server cabinet, plugged in the cables and like magic the display came right up. My sense of smug superiority evaporated moments later as I was shoving the computer back into the server cabinet. As I was pushing it in, it caught on something. I gave it a small jiggle to get it past the obstruction and a moment later the resistance disappeared. This was accompanied by the sickening whine of seven servers, three monitors and a server cabinet cooling fan powering down.
Ah.
Apparently that "obstruction" was the main power plug for the server cabinet.
Ya.
It's Monday.
And now my coffee is cold.
