I learned a new, descriptive term yesterday that is going to get a permanent place in my vocabulary - but first a bit of back story.
There was a Jesus pedlar standing outside of the Portage Place mall yesterday, handing out leaflets to people that outlined all of the different ways Satan would bugger them in Hell if they didn't adequately toady up to the Christian god. He had a brimming handcart bearing a sign that read, "Jesus Loves You," and anyone who unwittingly strayed too close to the car found a leaflet jammed unceremoniously into their hand. Naturally everyone who received one of these leaflets instantly fell to their knees to repent for their sinful lives, and began joyously weeping and speaking in tongues... well, in his dreams anyway. Some folks actually deigned to look a the front of the leaflet before they dropped it - usually without even breaking stride.
When I came back out of the mall after lunch, the vendor was gone, but he'd managed to spread his paper spoor nearly two blocks in all directions. There were discarded leaflets blowing across the sidewalks, catching in the gutters and nudging up against the buildings and bus shelters. He may not have made any converts, but he sure contributed to our downtown litter problem. That brings me back to the descriptive term: Religious bukkake. Somebody used that term in the
customers_suck community a day or two back, and it fit the situation perfectly.
Think about it.
He was doing this for his own gratification (buying himself salvation points in the Church of God). It was in your face. It left a mess behind.
[EDIT]
Just so to avoid misinterpretation, this is not a general shot at all Christians, nor their faith. Although I am a self-proclaimed agnostic, I respect the right of people to believe what they will, and even more respect for people who have the courage to promote their faith by being living examples of it. I don't have much respect for street corner leaflet people, regardless of their cause. I have yet to meet anybody who was swayed by a piece of photocopied paper that was shoved into their hand in the street.

Date: 2005-03-23 12:39 am (UTC)I believe one of our responsibilities as Christians is to be stewards of the earth. For someone to pass out leaflets that a lot of people are obviously just dropping, and then not pick them up, is not in keeping with that responsibility (though I also fault the people who dropped them for not giving them back or putting them in a trash can).
