One of the servers that I help maintain is like a watched pot in reverse. When we are here to watch it, it functions flawlessly. I got a call from the head office because one of their reports had failed over the weekend. The report usually fails on Saturday and Sunday, but because this was a long weekend, it failed on Monday too.

We never got around to naming these servers, but I think I'm going to dub this particular one Schrödinger's Cat. We do nothing when we are here except to check that it is running (and it always is). Why does it fail when we're not here to observe it? Does the act of observing it somehow change its state?
