Weekend update
Jul. 23rd, 2007 09:55 amSaturday:
We went to the farmers' market in the morning, and I finished assembling
atara's new computer that evening. As I was assembling the hardware on-line I debated over which OS to order with it, and finally settled on the OEM 64-bit Vista Home Premium1. My thinking was that if she didn't want it on her machine, I could create a second boot partition on my own computer and install it there. Mostly I was just curious to see how well a 64-bit OS would perform on 64-bit hardware.
After a couple of false starts I managed to get the OS installed and stable.
atara started installing her various applications (World of Warcraft, Thunderbird, Firefox, etc) and so far everything is working. Porting over her settings from the old system was a bit of a challenge, but experience paid off and I soon had her bookmarks and email restored to their pre-upgrade state. So far everything seems to be working well - though I am sure that will change a bit once she starts trying to set up some of her older software. She has already run into a few annoyances, though so far they are of the "I prefer the way this worked in XP" vein.
I agree with her sentiment - I am not enamoured with some of the dumbing-down changes they made in the Windows. Ah well, as long as blue smoke isn't escaping from her new computer, I am happy.
Sunday:
Sunday was a day of rest. I washed dishes, drank coffee, and sliced up the last of the strawberries for a gin concoction that a co-worker taught me about a few years ago.
In the evening our guild wiped a few times in Gruul's lair. We managed to down the priest, warlock and shaman, but the mage seems to have our number. I think the short answer is that we need one more healer. Overall it was fun, but there were a few things that pushed my Annoyance Button over the course of the evening.
1) Learn to pay attention when the raid leader describes the strategy. Please don't ask, "Who do we kill first?" after he's just explained the kill order in some detail. Especially don't ask that after he has just explained it again to somebody who asked the same thing. Please try and curb the ADD for five minutes, kk?
2) Why are you too important to run back after a wipe? I could understand it if you were nursing a flask, or if you only did it once in awhile, but the same people refused to run back after every single wipe.
3) Speaking of running back... please look before you buff. Buffing our party when three of us haven't zoned in yet doesn't do us much good. Please don't whine about it when we start pestering you for a buff before the pull.
The run reminded me of some of the things I definitely don't miss from the 40-man days of yore. Next up is the unannounced AFKs just prior to the pull... Our raid-leader made an off-handed comment along the lines of, "I think I'd kill myself if this was a 40-man."

1 Before you comment... I know that Vista crippled your hardware, won't run your software, is slow and bloated and ran over your dog. My experiences with it have been generally positive. I know that the Mac is a nice machine, but we were not interested in going that route. I know that modern Linux is free, does almost the same thing with enough work, and can be installed and largely configured in under a month, but we were not interested in going that route either.
