As I was sitting here at my computer this morning, sipping my first coffee, it occurred to me that I hadn't checked my blood glucose levels in well over a month. When I was first diagnosed, I was under doctor's orders to check it three times a day, later reduced to twice a day when my levels started to stabilize.

I continued checking it twice a day for about a year and a half before I slowed to once a day when my insurance started pushing back at reimbursing me for the lancets and strips.

Later, I caught an episode on a doctor's channel I follow on YouTube where he addressed the testing regimen for people with Type II. He said that requiring people to test themselves daily, or multiple times a day once they were on medications that were keeping the symptoms under control was pointless, and even a bit cruel. He argued that there was no good reason to require people to stab themselves once or twice a day for no measurable benefit, and that spot-checking was sufficient.

I brought it up with my own doctor later, and he agreed that spot-checking would definitely be sufficient since my blood readings had been coming back consistently good after he'd adjusted my medication about eighteen months earlier.

I had been meaning to get into a habit of testing it once a week or so, but I admit that I am more of a "when I notice the kit sitting there and realize it's been at least a month or more since I last used it" kind of guy.

Well... I noticed the kit this morning. One of the benefits of this current pandemic is that our diet has become more healthy (lots of home cooking), but yesterday was a cheat day when we ordered in from a local pub. I figured it might not hurt to see how my levels looked after all of that.

I tested my blood this morning and the levels came back perfect.

I guess I'm good for another month or two. Well, I have to see my doctor again next month, and he wants blood work in advance of that, so I guess I'll test it once or twice before that.

In fairness, my eating is not entirely healthy when left to my own devices. My breakfast the other day consisted of a sweet-potato, onion and leftover steak hash with fried eggs on top. Probably had way more salt and saturated fat than I want to think about, but it was darned good.

In fairness, my blood pressure is more of a concern to me these days than my glucose levels. I only learned recently that high blood pressure runs in the family.

Our family traditionally doesn't discuss medical issues, but we've loosened up a bit on that since my brother's death.

Anyway, on another front, here is a picture I took while walking along the river this week.
The old dock

Soon this will be a solid sheet of ice and buried under snow. For now, though, I am just appreciating how low the river is running as we slide into the winter season. These pilings are usually under water.

I had a follow-up appointment with the doctor today to go over the results of my sleep study, and to get an update on how things were going with my new medication. He tested my blood pressure again, and while it has not gone down, neither has it gone up. I fall right in that zone of "high, but not alarmingly high".

The other thing he did was write a note for the pharmacy to set me up with one of those stabby machines so that I can start measuring my blood sugar level. He had apparently intended to send me home with one on my last visit, but I guess it slipped his mind, and even though I was surprised by that, I did not exactly broach the subject. "Hey, did you want me to start stabbing myself and take glucose measurements on whatever spurts out of my body?"

The pharmacist stabbed me in the finger to show me how it worked. It hurt. I think she had it cranked up to Maximum Cruelty setting, so I may adjust that down a bit when I start using it myself.

The doctor has recommended that I take 2-3 readings a day. I know that some of you reading this are experienced with this stuff, so I was curious if you could give me some pointers. When do you typically take the readings? I am thinking first thing in the morning so that I can get a "fasting" reading, again before dinner, and then a couple of hours after dinner. Do you tend to trade off fingers and hands for the stabbing so as to not build up calluses, and to share the misery between fingers?

Once again I left my picture of the day until the last minute, and ended up grabbing a shot of one of the cats - my go-to subjects for when I leave it until late. Rather than dabbling in software effects like I have been doing lately, I went completely old-school with this one, and I like the result. I think the picture actually benefits from the fact that I shot it with my phone because the lens added some distortion that my DSLR might not have done.

File in: Things I hate.

I hate when I go to use the photocopier and notice that I have blood running down the back of my hand from a medium-sized gash, but have no idea when, how or where it happened.

It's not a serious cut, but it irks me that I have no idea how it happened. It's one thing if I can point to a cut and say, "That one was because nobody loves me, and this one was a cry out for attention," but these mystery cuts are troublesome. >.>
