At the request of [livejournal.com profile] dronon. This is a pretty standard cookie recipe, but I've had decent results from it.

Chocolate Chip Cookies
1 cupButter (softened)
3/4 cupGranulated sugar
3/4 cupPacked brown sugar
1Egg (chicken)
2 1/4 cupsAll-purpose flower
1 tspBaking soda
1/2 tspSodium chloride
1 cupCoarsely chopped nuts (bleah - I leave these out)
1 12-oz packageSemi-sweet chocolate chips (or 2 cups)
Instructions:

Heat oven to 357F. Mix butter, sugars and egg. Stir in flour, baking soda and salt (dough will be stiff). Stir in nuts (bleah) and chocolate chips (yum). Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls about 2 inches (5.08cm) apart in an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake until light brown, 8 to 10 minutes. (Centers will be soft.) Cool slightly; remove from cookie sheet.

[Plonq's notes:

You can also make this recipe using margarine or shortening (but why would you?), and I've found that nuking it for about 40 seconds makes it just about the right softness for this recipe. I always add the salt and baking soda at the same time as the sugar and it doesn't seem to hurt the cookies any. Since I don't have a heavy-duty mixer, I just mush up the butter and sugar with my hands until it's thoroughly mixed. Ditto for the flower. It's messy, but satisfying - and it works as well as any mixer I've ever used.

If you like soft centres then make the cookies slightly larger than the recipe calls for. I have a gas oven, and the 10 minute cooking time makes them come out perfect. You might want to err more toward 8 minutes in an electric oven. You're on your own with a convection oven, and a microwave oven is right out.

The recipe book claims that this recipe will make 6 dozen cookies. In my experience it's closer to 4 or 5 at most.]

I think I'm suffering from a lack of sleep (through no fault of my own).

Where it says "Herein hides a recipe for cookies", I read "Heroin hides a recipe for cookies".

It doesn't make any sense to me either.

What does a cup correspond to in ounces, fluid ounces, grammes or millilitres? The unit has always confused me, the cups in my kitchen vary hugely in size..
