[livejournal.com profile] atara has some more pictures of it in her journal.

We'd been half watching for aurora all weekend since Space Weather had mentioned that there might be some this weekend. I had expected them on Friday, or maybe Saturday night, but [livejournal.com profile] atara happened to be poking around in her lj earlier this evening when somebody in the [livejournal.com profile] winnipeg community mentioned that there was a pretty good light show in progress.

I'd rate it as better than pretty good - it was downright spectacular. While not quite as active as it's been in past, nor maybe as bright as we've seen it in past, this was the most colourful display that I've seen in a few years. It's one of the few things that makes it worth living in this northern climb.

Here it is over the neighbour's back porch. This near its peak brightness.

Almost bright enough to read a newspaper

Still over the neighbour's shed. Not quite as bright, but taking on a more classic aurora look.

I wish I could show this as an animation, dancing around like it was in person.

Looking due north over our house.

Just when we thought that it was done, it came back for an encore.

Looking down the street. The whole sky was ablaze.

The whole sky is ablaze with green fire.

I wish I'd had a chance to move away from the house and trees. Look at all the colours!

This one had the whole spectrum of colours.

Blasted trees! Ah well, at least they've lost all of their leaves.

More colours. Wow. Pretty.

Well, that's what you get for living near a landfill!

Oh, wait, these are naturally occuring? ^_^

The one over our house can be explained by the fact that Sundays are "beans night" here, but it's too much of a coincidence to think that everyone else in the city was having beans as well.

Great shots...

Those are great photos. I suppose that given how far south I am (south-central Wisconsin, U.S.), I should be content with seeing them twice in one year (this has been a good year for solar storms...). Usually it's more like once a decade or so.
