plonq: (Average Mood)

The moon was full and bright this morning as we were leaving for work, but unless the weather pattern changes between now and this evening then we are not going to see the eclipse.  I'll have the camera charged and ready just in case.  "See that tiny, over-exposed orange blob?  That's the moon!"

Although we've been leaving home for work at about the same time every day since late spring, it feels much earlier these days.  There is something about heading out to the car when the sky is black, the air is cold, and the moon is high that makes one take a step back and say, "Wait a minute, it's still night.  Aren't we ostensibly diurnal?  Shouldn't we still be in bed?"

My brain is still a coffee away from being properly functional this morning.  I could make a pot, but if I don't drink it all and make a fresh pot then my co-workers will whine when they roll in later in the morning to find a quarter pot of bubbling, bitter tar.  Well, to be fair, only one of them would whine.  The other one wouldn't know good coffee if it fell in his lap at a McDonalds drive-through.  I could bake the pot dry and he'd merrily scrape the sludge from the bottom into his mug and call it good.

Odd that your post with that LJ icon showed up only a few away from this post by [livejournal.com profile] tempesta in my friends display.

One place I used to work had no tap or sink near the coffee maker; for those you had to go use the sinks in the restrooms. It was not unusual for someone making a fresh pot to hold their mug under the drip until their cup was full before replacing the pot and going on their merry way. But as you probably know, the coffee comes out pretty strong at first and becomes weak by the time the pot finishes, and it balances out. If you let the whole pot brew to completion. But when someone takes the first cup out of the drip like this, it leaves the rest of the pot thin and wimpy, so it becomes a waiting game to see what poor suckers will come along and pour a cup without noticing how weak it is.

And with that, I think I'll go get another cup.

Apparently great minds think alike - though I rather like his animated ones much better than my static icon. I saw your reply to [livejournal.com profile] tempesta, and now that you mention it, there IS a striking similarity in drawing style to Happy Tree Friends.

Here's the source for our images (http://www.biaf.com.au/BIAF5/wac/15.swf) (on the off-chance that you haven't seen it yet).

Fortunately the coffee pot is only a few steps from my desk, so I can threaten to bite the arm off anyone who tries to snag the first drips of coffee. If they want to pull out the pot and grab it near the end of the cycle then that's their call, but leave the strong coffee for those of us who really need it.

Well, for those who can't tell the difference between coffee and carbon black, you could always give them a jar of instant and a spoon...

What appalls me is the utterly barbaric pracrice of putting a scoop of instant coffee and instant whitener into a cup of cold water... and nuking it. Bleah. I've tried it, and I've discovered that I get more pleasure out of chewing on coffee grounds.

It's true!

Whenever I make a pot of coffee, I turn the coffee maker off once its all dripped out. That way the coffee is still good two days later.

Or is cold coffee barbaric too?

I used to do that too. If you kill the heat under it right away it will keep for a couple of days, and it's good hot or cold. Cold coffee is not barbaric.

Adding powdered whitener and artificial sweetener to the cold coffee and then nuking it two days later would be barbaric, though.

How would good coffee fall on their laps at a McDonalds drive through though? Did they buy it somewhere else? o_o

I don't know what it's like other places, but the coffee at the McDonalds around here is halfway decent. They've been pushing very aggressively into that market demographic, and part of that strategy has been to improve their coffee.

They have opened a few coffee bars in test markets where all they sell is gourmet coffee and desserts - obviously trying to take a bite out of the Starbucks market share.
