Busy day

Making a couple of pies shouldn't take all day, should it? I suppose it can if the process includes shopping for parfait glasses and casserole dishes, grinding up tomatoes for sauce, baking pumpkins to make your famous filling, and then making the crusts from scratch while the filling cools.

[personal profile] atara's mom sent us a wonderfully evil-looking tomato grinder a couple of weeks back. We have since learned that we have been using it all wrong, but we still managed to get lots of good tomato sauce out of it. We came far short of what you could call a bountiful harvest from our garden this year, but we had enough ripe tomatoes to grind out two sizable pots of tomato sauce. This latest batch may end up as soup.
Come on, talk. Give us the juicy stuff.
I decided to make two pies again this year. I had frozen enough filling for one pie last year, and I made a fresh batch of filling this year. I followed the same recipe as I did last year, but look at the difference in colour! The pie on the left was made using the "sugar pumpkins" that we bought this year. I haven't had a chance to taste either pie yet, but I have a hunch we'll be buying the same kind of pumpkins again next fall.
Yummy pies!
We took a break to meet some friends up at Blondies. You may recall a couple of earlier pictures I posted from there, with the 2-pound hamburgers. They've changed the decor a bit since then. We were amused. I am probably going to blank out a couple bits from this picture and cross-post it to [livejournal.com profile] customers_suck.
If only more restaurants enforced rules like these!
