I hate meetings

I just came from a meeting.  Here is a summarized version of my part in it.

So, Plonq, given that the database is still in testing - which you're not a part of - and we still don't have a final draft of what is going to be in it, can you produce a report from that data once it goes into production in two weeks?

I don't know.  Until I see the actual data, I can't promise anything.

We need something more than that.  Does it at least seem feasible, given what you've heard so far in this meeting?

Anything is feasible, but I can't make a commitment to produce a usable report until I see the final data and determine if it is of adequate quantity, quality and form for me.

But in theory you could produce the desired report for us if all the data was there in a form that you could use?

In theory, yes.

Ah, good.  We'll put you down for a confirmed "yes" then.

You should've said, "Maybe and that's even iffy."

And stuck with that no matter how hard they pressed.

Give them their results with a bigassed watermark stating "EXPERIMENTAL: NOT FOR USE!!!" Draw it in red marker if you must. Do not let anyone make you do reports with suspicious sources without marking that the results aren't trustworthy somehow. Keep a paper log (no electronic file that is easily deleted) of your own of when you do each experimental result and who you've told that the results aren't to be relied upon until the database is solid.

The point is, if you do not and certain people use YOUR results to make bad decisions, who do you think will pay with their career? The managers above you?

I'd have started singing the doom song. At the top of my lungs. To anger them all. Then tell them they're the stupidest people I've ever worked for, this is saying a lot, and if they're going to ignore every word I said I might as well producce a report for them on how feces are safe and healthy for them to eat, since they're not going to pay attention to what you say why should they pay attention to what you write?
