I've always liked Rodney Dangerfield, and here's an example of why.  He's going in for valve replacement surgery on his heart.  In an interview beforehand...

Asked how long he would remain in the hospital after Wednesday's operation, he said: "If things go right, I'll be there about a week, and if things don't go right, I'll be there about an hour and a half."

Even facing serious surgery the man doesn't lose his self-depreciating sense of humour.

I read a fairly recent interview about Dangerfield in a .. can't remember which 'zine it was, but it focussed on his current life and how he is. The interviewer visited him and his wife in their high-rise Hollywood apartment. It was very sad, and it struck me that the comic image he's built for himself all these years has beaten the *man* down. The gist of the story was how Dangerfield is a habitual marijuana user and has lit up nearly every day of his life since his early 20's, and how now, with his various medical conditions, he's essentially disgusted with life and just "waiting around to die". He commented how nobody really knows the real him (except his wife) because everyone has come to expect his characters "are" the real him.

Really was depressing.
