My week actually started off OK, but yesterday my boss volunteered me to help analyze a report that was producing unexpected results.
They sent me chunk of SQL code, and a screenshot of the report that was failing, and asked me to compare the results of that report to the output of a report that was run earlier against a dataset that we can no longer access.
Even though it was built against a data source I had never seen before in my life, over the course of two days I managed to isolate the bad data, and sent out a work-around to get them going until the DBAs could fix the source tables.
Then I discovered that the PM who they charged with this thing was clinically insane, and had no idea of the scope of my involvement. He has made my life hell for the past couple of days before our director took over and pushed me aside for my own good. I mean, at points this guy tried calling me while I was on the phone, then PM'd me saying, "CALL ME RIGHT NOW". Then he emailed me the same, and tried calling me twice more.
All over something comparatively trivial.
I was afraid I was going to come out of this looking bad, but fortunately word has leaked down that my director is actually quite pleased with the work I did, and understands that this guy went way out of bounds in what he was demanding from me after (by all rights) my work was done.
Also, we were just talking about you over dinner this evening and how we haven't seen you in ages. We totally need to get together sometime soon and bask in the geeky awkwardness of each others' company.
Ugh, that's a terrible situation to get stuck in! I'm really glad your director has a major clue.
Ach, I would like to bask in your Plonqedness too! Although news-wise my life has been fairly dull, and it's bad form to mostly complain about first-world problems. I'm doing a meet on the 26th, then two weeks later it's my birthday. And at some point this year I'd like to borrow you to go shopping for a new set of bed mattresses.
Heck, if you're free for a longer phone call tonight, I could really use your advice for a work-related thing I'm dealing with, and I have a couple of garden-shopping strategy questions for Atara.
We can go the extra geeky step and do a video conference tonight if you like. I am assuming you have a webcam built into your netbook, and atara probably wouldn't mind giving the camera in her tablet a trial run before she uses it this weekend.
