plonq: (Sad Mood)
[personal profile] plonq
I spoke prophetic words this morning.  Earlier today [livejournal.com profile] the_gneech posted about how his dad had taken a spill and broken his hip.  In my response I said, "[sigh] My own parents are getting up to the age where I am starting to worry about things like that (dad's pushing 80)."

I just learned tonight mom took a spill off the step ladder and broke her collar bone.  =(

Apparently this happened on Saturday, and I'm just the last one to find out.  I'm somewhat mortified, because this is how I found out (changed her user name here):

[21:33] [plonq's mom]: his lapyop has gone to Toronto for maintenance
[21:34] [plonq's mom]: uh laptop
[21:34] Plonq: I'm in the market for a new computer as well, but I'm taking my time and shopping around.  The prices are really dropping just now, so I don't want to jump in too quick.  I figure if I wait a month or two I can get much more machine for the same price as I'd pay now.
[21:34] Plonq: Heh.  I didn't even catch the misspelling until you pointed it out.
[21:35] [plonq's mom]: i'm typing with only ome hand and don't know where the letters are that way
[21:36] Plonq: Typing with one hand again?  Are you eating while you type, or did you do something to your other hand?
[21:37] [plonq's mom]: i broke my left collar bone on Saturday

Urgh.

She said she's ok, aside from being in a lot of pain at the moment. I'm more than a little worried, though, because she also mentioned that the two pieces of the break are overlapping. I'm hoping that doesn't mean that they have to operate, but I'm guessing that she'll have to go back to have some pins inserted at the very least. =/

It was bad enough when dad was doing some construction work after he retired and broke his wrist. They had to re-break it twice because it wasn't setting right, and in the end it never did set right. He was just getting into golf at the time and he had to give that up for good. [sigh] Parents, oy!

I... do have to worry some for my mom, but not that much (she's just 56), but my granny... Oy!
She'll be 90 in February. She just won't stop! She's more active than all of us, goes up and down the stairs a lot, goes to do grocery shopping alone even though there's people that could go with her, or even instead of her.
They once bought a hip... thing to prevent it from breaking if she ever fell, but she refuses to use it, she used it perhaps 3 times, and she's had it for like 3 years.
Back in November or December she was mugged (yay for Mexico city), the guys had guns and all, and they struggled a little with her to get her bag (she had just gotten $3K in cash from the bank, and they knew). She wasn't resisting, but she was carrying the bag on the higher part of her arm. Just from that little struggle she got a huge black bruise and half the back part of her hand swelled :/
(that's another thing we told her not to do but she kept doing, going to the bank to get huge amounts of money all by herself)

She mentioned it so casually? Man, she's a tank...!
Hope it all heals all right. Breaks are not fun at that age. :/

Yeah, I quite understand. My dad turns 80 in a few weeks and is still fairly active (works out at the gym 3X week, mows front field on riding tractor, etc...)

*hugs!*
Here's hoping she heals up OK :)
