Waste not, want not.

This may look ugly now, but by the time it is done simmering we will have some lovely chicken stock to put in the freezer for future meals. The cool, wet weather today seemed like a good excuse to haul our collection of carcasses out of the freezer for rendering. Some ageing carrots from the farmers' market, a Walla Walla onion (as well has half an unidentified onion found in the fridge) and some surplus garlic will round out the flavour nicely. I was about to peel the garlic when [livejournal.com profile] atara caught me and said, "Why bother? It will simmer out the flavour anyway, so save yourself some work." In retrospect I probably didn't need to peel the onion either - in fact its skin would have lent some interesting colour to the stock. That's something to remember for next time.

I tried a couple of different settings for this and finally settled on a flash shot. I shot it at with an aperture of f/11.0 with the shutter clicking at 1/200th of a second. The one I shot at f/9.5 was actually a bit better lit, but this one had slightly better composition. I did a fair bit of obvious (and not so obvious) modification to this one in software. I sharpened it a bit, selectively desaturated some parts, cropped it and then added the border.

Yes, we were bad and ate out again. It was a lunch of opportunity.
