I take back some of the nasty things I've been saying about UPS since Friday (even if most of these things were muttered under my breath).

[livejournal.com profile] atara ordered something from a US company recently.  When she placed the order she put a check in the box for surface delivery, which was priced at around $8.95.  Imagine our surprise when, after pre-paying for shipping, the item arrived at the door with a $40.12 COD.  This covered the provincial and federal sales taxes, and an additional "brokerage" fee for UPS.  I was a little miffed at UPS for simply clearing it without giving us the option of clearing it ourselves.  Rather than have UPS keep trying to deliver the item to our house (and give up because we are not home) we called and asked them to hold the parcel at their depot so that I could drop by and pick it up this afternoon.

I braved snow and bad roads to get out there today, fully intent on ripping somebody there a new anus.  By the time I got there (rather, by the time I finally found the place) I'd calmed down a bit, but I still voiced my displeasure over the situation.  The young lad behind the counter listened politely to my tirade, and then suggested that I could probably still clear the item myself if that's what I really wanted.  YES, that's what I really wanted.  From that point on they literally bent over backward to help, and I am hereby forced to reconsider my vow never to use their service again.

I had to drive around a bit and visit a couple more offices, but the final damage was $7.98 for PST/GST and no brokerage fees.

UPS is okay around here, so if a vendor insists on shipping via UPS to me I don't object, but I would never use them to ship an item to someone else. I have heard too many horror stories of UPS employees who would rather die than do their job properly; that's just how underpaid they are.
