plonqWhen I stopped for that hamburger I posted here on Saturday, I also bought a replacement jar of their home-made relish. I bought a jar right at the end of the 2009 market and used the last of it about a month ago. There is nothing exceptional about the relish, rather I like it largely for its simplicity. The fact that it contains no high-fructose corn syrup is just the icing on the cake. HFCS-free icing, mind you.
I shot this one at 1/10th of a second, with the aperture cranked wide open to f/1.8 in order to blow out the background. I rested the camera on the table for the shot, and I considered trimming away some of the foreground table, but I like the effect of the short depth of field on it. This shot gives you an idea of just how narrow the depth of focus is with an aperture that wide. If you look at the jar itself, you can see that the edges of the lid are starting to become indistinct where the jar curves away. In some ways I wish I could have afford an f/1.4 lens, but then I stop and wonder what kind of pictures I could take with such a narrow range of usable focus.
