After breaking the original pipe with their snake on Friday, the company sent out a couple of plumbers today to cut out the old pipe and replace it with a newer PVC pipe. The process took less than an hour, and the final bill was just over $200 after tax. The pipe was long overdue to be replaced anyway - when we tore away the basement ceiling there was evidence that it has been leaking in places for awhile. There were neatly formed little stalagmites of pipe sludge in places along the length of the pipe.

The kitchen drain has always been a little slow for as long as I have owned the house. Now it drains with a vengeance, and as a bonus it doesn't drain into the laundry room downstairs...

[Edit]

Apparently I was so tired last night that I forgot to post yesterday's picture here. You weren't missing much. Shortly after we were married, and before she was working, [livejournal.com profile] atara decided that she was going to use her free time to remodel the bedroom. We got about 1/4 of the way done stripping one wall when she got a full-time job, and the renovation got put on hold until we had more time to devote to it.

Finishing this room as been on our "to do" list for a long time, but we don't spent much daylight time in the bedroom, so it tends to repeatedly fly under our radar.
