The final bit of incentive to get our passports was that starting this year, we need them if we want to drive across into the US. Until now, a birth certificate and photo ID was good enough.
It's more of an accomplishment than you might think. We've been working on these things for years; we'd get about halfway through the process and then stall. We have three unused sets of passport photos stashed away that never got used.
They recently streamlined the process for getting passports. The US has cranked down the border, requiring us to have passports to drive across. In response, the government up here has made it easier to get a passport.
