plonq: (Christmas Mood)
[personal profile] plonq
[livejournal.com profile] atara and I have been in a back and forth debate in the weeks leading up to Christmas over what we should do for dinner that day. If we have anything that could be counted as a tradition here, it would be dinner at Winter Garden Chinese Restaurant on Christmas Eve, and leftovers on Christmas Day. Our plan is to dine in this year, but we are at odds over what we should cook.

I am leaning toward a goose, but that's hardly a modern tradition. Feel free to dip into your own culture and tradition in answering this one. What would you consider to be a traditional meal for a modern Christmas?

[Poll #1501340]

(Ignore my silly answer - I already know what I want. It's your input that interests me.)

For my family, turkey and pumpkln pie. Ham is also usually present. Couple of variations on potato. Cakes and pies. Followed by my dad sleeping in front of the football game on TV, only waking up if someone tries to change the channel. Opening presents during and after dessert.

This sounds very much like my own family's Christmas traditions, but substitute hockey for the football.

It sure beats sharing a meal of macaroni and cheese with your plushies.

In the USA a lot of people avoid turkey because everyone just had it for Thanksgiving, but of course that's less of an issue north of the border where Thanksgiving is celebrated several weeks earlier.

My vote goes for ham. Smoked salmon would be good to but that's more of a snack/appetizer than a main course.

I know my perception is skewed because I'm in a city sometimes described as The People's Republic of... but geese for the holidays have been available in most the the grocery stores around here for as long as I've living in Seattle (24 years). I mean, even SAFEWAY stocks them every year.

That's only a couple steps above Walmart, man.

Modern tradition here in .uk is definitely roast turkey. Then turkey sandwiches, turkey curry, turkey soup... Glazed ham is very much a secondary thing.

Goose is more traditional in a Dickensian sense - but you'd definitely have to go out of your way to find one.
