The few!

We had a bit of loot drama last night when some of our guild mates discovered that, yes, even armour tokens cost GP. A couple of them insisted that there were many guilds - none of which they could name off the top of their heads - who did not charge for tokens. Some research on-line revealed that not only do guilds charge for these tokens, but we are near the low end of what they tend to charge in GP.

Anyway, one of our officers is a very nice person, and as such he has become a real target for anyone in the guild who has a gripe because they know he will not wig out on them. He took the brunt of the displeasure from the malcontents last night, much of it in private whispers. This morning he posted that he was seriously thinking of stepping down just so he could log in and enjoy the game again without being the target of a flood of angry /tells every time he popped into the game. One of the things he said is something I've heard mirrored by other guild officers at other times. "I used to really enjoy logging in to play this game. Now some days I dread it."

I suggested that we should create a new officer position called "Target Dummy". This would simply be the person to whom all gripes, complaints or suggestions should be directed. His job would be to hold the position until he got burnt out, then choose a replacement. The idea got shot down, of course, but that didn't stop me from doing up a recruitment poster anyway, just in case the GM and other officers change their minds down the road.

Below is a copy of what I posted to the Officer forum this morning.

Okay, so building on my earlier idea of adding another officer - here is a recruiting poster for the general forum. I'll post it here first to get your feedback.

:D Fame! Glory! Gold! Huzzah! :D

Join the ranks of the Officers and all these can be yours.

Looking for fun and a challenge? We are looking for a few good folks to fill needed roles being vacated by our current core of officers. As an officer you will be joining a dynamic, powerful cabal feared by all, who rule the guild with an iron fist. Also, you will be able to chat in our secret officer channel. Here’s just a sample of the exciting, dynamic things that our exciting, powerful and dynamic officers say in our secret channel:

[redacted] Well, it looks like I made the raid after all. I was going to cut myself this evening instead but my wife hid the razors.

[redacted] I hear you bro. I miss having fun. I remember when I used to look forward to logging in rather than dreading it.

[redacted] Your mom misses having fun... aw, what the [redacted] am I going on about? Do you think anyone would notice if I said it was our anniversary again next week and I’ll be off for the week?

[redacted] So are we going to pull this boss or what?

But wait, there’s more! As an officer of the guild, you will have the power to keep meticulous notes about who attended raids, and who got which loot. You will be empowered to handle petty, childish squabbles between your guild mates. You will always be kept in the loop about who hates who, and who shouldn’t be invited to raids because they’re [redacted] slackers, and about what guilds already have the content we’re progressing through on farm status. You will have the power to kick anybody you like from the guild, but you won’t because that would be socially irresponsible. You will get to maintain member status on the guild list, and clean up bank tabs. Huzzah!

[Q] Gosh, Erui, that sounds really exciting and dynamic. How much does it pay?
[A] All these benefits, and you want pay as well? All this happiness only comes to those who volunteer their time.

[Q] Well, I guess the power is worth it. Some of that stuff doesn’t sound like much fun. Obviously there are perks to being an officer. What else do I get?
[A] You get a custom channel in which you can commiserate with the other officers when things get rough.

[Q] And...?
[A] Dude, custom channel!

[Q] Well, it all sounds very tempting, but I’ve never been a guild officer before. What else am I expected to do? Suppose I screw it up?
[A] Our friendly and helpful guild members will be happy to /w whenever you log in to let you know everything you’ve done wrong.

[Q] Oh. Well that’s good... I think. Will they offer suggestions?
[A] Absolutely. They will tell you how other guilds do it, and how their last guild did it. If they’re feeling extra helpful they will also make sure to let you know who they hate in the guild, and who hates them. Sometimes they will offer friendly, helpful suggestions about where you should stick your raid schedule, or what they think of the fact that you’re running ToC instead of Ony. Or they will give you a friendly heads-up like, “Sorry, but my RL is really interfering with my play time, so I’m going to have to leave the guild.” Then they’ll quit and join a hardcore guild that raids six nights a week. Don’t we just <3 them for sparing our feelings with a bald faced lie!

[Q] Um. I have to admit that this doesn’t sound like much fun. You say this is the upside of being an officer?
[A] Absolutely! Oh, it’s not all tea and roses. Sometimes being an officer has its down sides as well.

[Q] x.x Like what?
[A] Well, sometimes you question why you are spending $15 a month and volunteering your time to try and make a game fun for a bunch of other people when it reaches the point that you actually dread logging in some days. But only most days are like that. Sometimes when you log in during the wee hours you are the only one online, and you can do your daily quests without a barrage of /tells reminding you of every character flaw you possess and bad decision you’ve ever made. Being an officer is like being in a loveless marriage, where you only hang on through grim determination and a misguided sense of obligation.

[Q] If it’s so awful, then why do you do it?
[A] None of us are right in the head.

[Q] ... I’m not so sure I want to be an officer now. You make it sound like suck wrapped in misery and despair.
[A] No, that would be Raid Leader. Now that is a job that will chew you up and [redacted] you out in no time!

There you have it! Sign up now for fun and glory and fame! Be the envy of your friends. Have women, men, farm animals swoon in your presence! Huzzah!

By my count, there's at least 3 reasons for me to be an officer, and only one reason for me not to!

It's really not as bad as all that, but there is a small group of the usual suspects who wear on the nerves after awhile. [livejournal.com profile] atara and I don't have it nearly as bad as the other two since "D" left awhile back.

Roth actually has a "Target Dummy" rank, but we call it "Ambassador." It's a non-raiding officer rank who listens to player complaints and brings up any issues during officer meetings. I honestly don't know why anyone would want that rank, but we have a few people who have it.

Our previous guild (the one that eventually disbanded and reformed as Solace) was a lot more structured like that at the top. We had an assistant GM, class leaders and the like. I was the priest class leader in that guild toward the end - I got the job after my predecessor cleaned out the guild bank and transferred to another server (we got everything back and his account got suspended).

For all our little hiccoughs here and there, our current guild is a sea of calm and harmony compared to its predecessor.
