When they made me an officer in the guild, I didn't realize that it included the role of psychologist.

We have a fairly new kid in the guild who is a slightly insecure e-peener. During a Nexus run earlier today he finished third in dps behind two players who are much better geared than he is. His response was to blow every last copper he had on a different spec, new gear, gems and enchants to try and squeeze out another 400dps.

After a 10-man gear junket through Naxx 10 this evening (for some of our new level 80s) he started whining at me in private chat about how nobody likes him. I suspect that he's more right than he knows, but I made a token effort to mollify him anyway. The problem is that no matter what I say to him, he inevitably manages to twist it around and take it as a personal attack. Naturally I tried to reassure him with the usual hollow platitudes, but what I really wanted to say was, don't mistake contempt for hate.

But he'd probably just twist that around too.

Hahahaha, awwwww. Yeah how old is he? I thought he was around my age... I also thought he didn't like you and figured I was the only one who put up with telling him his dps and stuff all the time.

He did give me some good advice on tanking. I think. You're probably in a better position to assess that than I am.

I was surprised he stayed for Nax10, too. He puts up a stink whenever we run it. Of course, we all know that feeling. Except tonight I got sweet gear yaaay.

He's not really a bad kid overall I think, he just has some mental/emotional issues. I can deal with the insecurity issues, but it gets frustrating when he twists around everything I say to him into a personal attack. This is almost verbatim from last night:

"So why is that druid girl mad at me?"

"It's because you were barking out confusing orders in Vent during the boss fight. That's one of the few strict rules we have in Vent. Once the fight starts, no back-seat raid leading. We don't mind suggestions and new ideas, just not in the middle of the fight."

"Oh, so I should just shut up and know my place. I see how it is. Is that why everyone hates me?"

He doesn't sound like he'll stay with Solace all that long. Sounds too ambitious for a laid back guild.

I don't think he's going to stick around much longer either, given how every conversation he starts with me is prefaced with, "I think everybody hates me here. Maybe it would be best if I quit and go somewhere else."

No worries. If you hadn't set him off, something else would. He's a kvetch waiting to happen.
