This is one of those problems that most people probably wouldn't mind having; we are a week into November and I still have twelve unallocated vacation days. I am going to cash out six of them over Christmas, which will get me off work from the 22nd of December through the end of January 4th.1

That still leaves me with six days to play with, and I have a couple of ideas for them. If I come in next Monday and then take the rest of the week off, that burns up three more of them. On a plus, that would give me some free time to get winter tires put on the car.

Another option that appeals to me on some levels is to take long weekends between now and my Christmas break. On the other hand, I think that I would get a bit of push back from my boss over that plan. Unionised employees are require to take their vacation time in blocks, and while management employees are granted more flexibility, it usually means within reasonable limits. I don't think that they would be particularly happy if I decided next year that I was going to use my 25 vacation days to take a long weekend every second week for example.

1 No, my maths are not wrong. Our industry has an extra vacation day at the start of the year - something that was negotiated a century or so back.

Why does it matter to them if you take a day here an there instead of blocks?

Also, yeah it sounds inconsiderate, but I agree. I hate having to burn up vacation time. I'd rather have the option to carry it over and use it for something useful.

That is a very tempting idea, and don't think that I haven't been considering it. =) I suggested it to [livejournal.com profile] atara earlier and she shot daggers out of her eyes at me because we kinda agreed to level up our mains together.

It's fun discovering new game content together, so I guess I can live with working when I could be questing.

That's what one engineer here did--he was out every other Thursday for almost half the year using up his vacation.

One of the managers at the R&D facility I worked at previous to my current job ended up with an entire summer/fall of long weekends. Some even four day weekends!

Eventually everyone got used to the fact that he wasn't going to be there on Fridays or Mondays, so it wasn't too difficult to work out.

I just don't want to become like one of our managers. He would simply not show up for work on some days and put them in later as retroactive vacation days. It made it a pain to try and organize meetings or the like with him.

Then again, it turns out the main reason he was doing this was because he was an alcoholic, so I especially don't want to be like him...

With six carefully placed days off, I won't work a 5 day week until February.
Unfortunately the only way I could do that was to pick Wednesdays. Makes for twice as many Friday nights and Monday mornings.

One day off every 15 days, so you'd eventually have a couple to spare if you needed~! Also it would be great because your co-workers would never know WHICH day you would be taking off (unless you have an OCD calendar-dude in your office), only that you would DEFINITELY be out some day every other week.

I get one "personal" day every 2 months. :(
