I'm sitting in the Vancouver airport, awaiting the boarding call for the last leg of my trip to Nanaimo for Dad's funeral. The flight in from Edmonton was nice - smooth and comfortable, but the leg from Winnipeg to Edmonton was brutal. Firstly I was crammed in the aisle seat in the last row of a tiny commuter jet. The only washroom was right beside me, so people kept jostling me every time they had to squeeze into or out of the WC.

The first half of the flight was surprisingly turbulent, and when it finally settled down enough for them to serve beverages, I learned that they weren't serving coffee. Oops. I had been counting on that coffee. Ah well, I had a long enough layover in Edmonton to pick up a coffee and omelette. The flight was also noisy and too hot/cold. Apparently the heater on the plane was on a binary switch, so it was either trying to melt me or cryogenically freeze on five minute intervals.

Dad’s funeral is tomorrow, and Friday we are going to take his ashes out and scatter them in the ocean. We don’t have much in the way of family politics, so it was a bit depressing to learn that some have already crept into the funeral. I won’t go into details about it yet, but it is something that rubs me the wrong way on some levels.

Ah, there is the pre-boarding call and my cue to wrap this up.

presumably you/your family have checked that the ashes will actually be available to scatter on the day following the funeral?

I only ask because when my Nan died last month, there was a 10 day wait to collect the ashes from the crematorium.

Maybe they work quicker over there?

Apparently the ashes are waiting at the church for today's memorial service. They are in a water-soluble container that will dissolve away very quickly when it is tossed into the ocean. Hopefully we don't have the same driving rain tomorrow like we have been experiencing for the past couple of days or it could make the process tricky. At the very least we may need to employ some strategic umbrellas for the ceremony.

I'm sorry to hear that your Dad passed away.

I'm thinking good thoughts for a decent time with family this weekend. I don't know what to say other than that.
