In Halderstadt, Germany, an organist kicked off a performance of the late, radical composer John Cage's 'Organ 2/ASLSP' (an acronym for 'as slow as possible'), which could be performed in 20 minutes, but, thanks to technology and imagination, will be performed over a period lasting 639 years. The first six months will be devoted to creating the organ's first note. The purpose of the unusual 'performance' is to contrast the piece with the frenzied pace of modern society.

Sadly I don't think our network here would be up to the task of streaming that in real time. I didn't think that our network could get any slower, but I was wrong. I find myself pining for the glacial speeds that I was so appalled by last week.

Today's new coffee experience: The Roma. This one is two shots of espresso over lemon rind, with a couple drops of lemon juice. This would be best served as a palate-cleanser after a meal. The lemon is fairly subtle, and serves mostly to accentuate the coffee's natural bitterness. It is unusual, but not unpleasing.

I doubt it'll get past the first two notes. All modern semiconductors age and become dead within 30 to 50 years. The only way I can concieve of an organ playing for 600 years is to have a long playerpiano style roll of mylar with holes, allowing gold contacts to touch and actuate air valves for a pipe organ. The whole thing would need to be inside a closed pressure vessel of pure N2 to resist corrosion.
