Installing Vista 64 onto the new RAID1 configuration on
atara's machine proved to be a little trickier than I had anticipated. Apparently this is not an unusual problem, and there was an impressive list of dubious fixes available. There seemed to be an equal number of authors who said that the problem was intractable, and it simply couldn't be done.
In the end, the solution was breathtakingly simple, and rather dumb at the same time. I unplugged her SATA DVD drive and used the IDE DVD drive out of my computer to do the install.
It worked perfectly on the first try.
The lesson here is never throw out old hardware because you never know when you will need it again.
