Jul. 16th, 2007 02:20 pmThe whole Iraqi conflict summed-up in one line:
"If somebody is worth shooting once, they're worth shooting twice," he said.
atara has been having a variety of problems with her computer over the past while. My hunch is that the problems are a combination of software, and heat (she has an old case that was not designed to radiate the kind of heat that her system produces now). Her current system was a fairly inexpensive stop-gap that was supposed to carry her over for a couple of years until we did a formal upgrade.
Well, it's been over three years, and her birthday is coming up, so I figured it was time to give her a proper upgrade. Let's just say that she is going to be the alpha geek in the house for awhile. Highlights include an AMD64 dual-core 6000+, nVidia 8800 Ultra video card and 4GB of ram. To help me get over my inevitable case of computer envy, I took the liberty of tacking an order of my own (nothing fancy - just a couple sticks of memory).
Other than perhaps a new case for my computer, I figure this memory should carry me for a couple more years before I begin to think about upgrading. I am pretty happy with the performance I have been getting.
At this time last week I was not happy with the performance that I was getting - in fact my system had become downright slow and unstable. WoW was one of the most affected applications, and it had gone from crashing once every week or so to dying multiple times in a night. I checked my system for viruses, Trojans and root kits, but everything came up clean.
Finally I looked at the anti-virus program itself. It was causing the system to hang for 1-2 minutes at a time on reboot (and I've rebooted the system more in the last two weeks than I had in the prior two years), and even when the system was idling, it was taking up 120MB+ of system memory. On a hunch, I uninstalled Trend PC Cillin and downloaded the free home version of Avast. So far... problem solved. The system boots up faster, runs faster, and has not crashed since.
I wish all tech support problems were as easy to handle as my own.
