In spite of the noisy new tenants in the hotel, I managed to sleep in this morning and catch up on some much-needed rest. I lounged around in my room reading for an hour, then wandered up to the hotel restaurant where I managed to kill another hour over breakfast. It was still grey and raining a bit when I got up, but by the time I was finished my last coffee the weather had turned a bit less dour, and I decided to take a quick road trip with no particular destination in mind.

I took a few pictures while I was out, a sampling of which are behind this cut.

Gopherville was apparently a theme park of sorts, located just east of Langenburg, Saskatchewan. The hand-painted sign just screams "small town kitsch". I wish that I could have seen this attraction when it was open, but from the state of the buildings it looks like it has been closed for quite a few years.
Gopherville

I wanted to get closer so that I could get some more detail, and perhaps some better angles for the shots, but there were signs up announcing that this was Private Property, and that there was Absolutely No Trespassing. While the folks out this way are friendly enough, it has not escaped my notice that a lot of them are not shy about openly carrying around guns on their own property. Suffice to say that I chose the route of discretion.

I debated driving into Yorkton, but the winds carried me south down Hwy 8. I followed that south as far as Rte 601, which looked interesting-enough to draw me west again. It was actually a very scenic route, and this picture doesn't do it proper justice. On the other hand, this picture gives you a pretty good idea of what the terrain around the area where I'm working just now.
Country Road

I followed 601 as far as the village of Tantallon, before my bladder started reminding me that I'd had three cups of coffee just prior to the start of my trip. I could have stepped around beside the car and done my business there, with no witnesses other than the ubiquitous red-winged blackbirds, but I decided that this was as good an excuse as any to return to the hotel. I had some administrative work I wanted to take care of before tonight's Karazhan run. (Yes, I'm working on my day off -- I suck.)
Village Office

This deer statue at the town limits of Tantallon caught my eye, and I snapped a quick shot of it in passing.
Oh Deer

A side note here: The book that I'd been reading over breakfast is one that I picked up that last time I was in town. It's a tutorial on effective editing techniques for digital photographers. I haven't read very far into the book yet, but I decided to put some of what I already learned to the test on the pictures I posted here. All of them have been tweaked - some more obviously than others - and I am curious to hear your thoughts on the results. Although I could make it obvious by posting the originals, I want to see if you can figure out what I've done to each of them.

I keep forgetting how big the sky seems on the prairies. I have to set myself to driving through again sometime instead of just flying over. :)

Good to see you have some time to drive around and look at the area. I hope the strike ends soon and you can head back to Sarah and Winnipeg.
