Crocuses

The first real sign of spring for me is when the first crocuses bloom. It was a beautiful afternoon when I got home from work today, so I decided to grab the camera and snap a couple of shots to document the occasion. It turns out that the first bees of the season have also made their appearance, and one of them was kind enough to pose for me.

But seriously, that's got some sweet detail... is it a macro lens? You take that picture with a bee like 6 inches from your nose?!

Not a macro lens, just a zoom lens with limited macro capability. Now if I had been using atara's camera, I could have got in close enough to pick out the individual grains of pollen on the bee's knees.

Assuming the bee would let one get in close enough for that, mind you.

I'm pleased with the result. Digital cameras often have trouble with the various "blue" shades.

I took the picture using the camera's "vivid" setting, which slightly boosts the saturation and contrast. At times it makes the colours a bit too vibrant, but overall I'm pleased with the results it gives.
