Just when one starts to think that Fred Phelps can't get any more repugnant, he does.

We have a few Amish communities around here, and while those folks may be pledged to live a good life by the rules of God, they aren't allergic to delivering a good old-fashioned assbeating when they think someone needs it. We can only hope. =^_^=

Um, I thought the Amish were non-violent? Turning the other cheek and all that?

Yes, that is unfortunate in this instance, isn't it?

To outsiders, yes. Something about outsiders being innocent by virtue of their ignorance of Amish lifeways.

I've heard attitudes can be different within the community, however, among those who should know better...I'll just hope they feel a bit brotherly when Phelpsie shows up. :)

Just when you think it would be impossible for terrible situation to get any worse, these people actually plan on harassing these people at a funeral?

Hell, law or no law; If these folk ever showed up at funeral I was attending somebody had better call and ambulance.

All I can hope for is that he and his ilk are miserable in their own pathetic lives and that nothing good will ever happen for any of them.

They pick their targets carefully

Notice how you never hear of them protesting at the funeral of mobsters, or Hells Angels?

I wonder if the Amish would do the regular world a favor and throw Phelps and his ilk into a burning barn? I was going to say woodchipper, but an Amish woodchipper would be really slow.

Of course he is still getting the media coverage he craves. I wonder if this is a situation where if the media never mentions him again, he'd go away.

He gets the media coverage by constantly lowering the bar. He and his followers aren't getting the attention they were when they first started picketing the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq, so they've uppped the ante a bit.

The problem is that he and his cronies are just barely keeping themselves within the law in what they do. They are a very smart and cautious lot, seeking out ways to maximize attention and outrage without technically breaking any laws.

A little roadwork outside their compound in Kansas...

A dozen sticks of dynamite under the new construction...

I figure it might be a pleasant change of pace to help these whale turds experience a soldier's life in Iraq?

I read the Wikipedia article about them not too long ago. Although I'd heard of the Westboro Baptist Church before, there were some things in that article I hadn't heard before that really had me thinking, 'holy crap, these guys are scary'.
