Unfortunately [livejournal.com profile] atara's birthday present did not arrive in time for her birthday yesterday, but since she already knows what she is getting, I figured it would be okay to post the details here. Actually it's something that both of us have been wanting, and since both of us have birthdays falling pretty close together, I decided to bite the bullet and order them in "his and hers". With the on-line discount being offered by this company, and the additional 12% from an employee purchase plan at my company, I decided that this would be a pretty good time to grab a pair of notebooks.

Here are some of the details on the systems (when they eventually get here):

  • Intel T2500 (2GHz) dual-core processor

  • 15.4" wide-aspect display

  • 1 GB dual-channel DR2 memory

  • 100G 5400RPM HD (I considered upgrading to 7200SATA, but the upgrade price was ridiculous)

  • 256MB GeForce Go 7300 TurboCache video

  • 8x dual-layer DVD+/-RW

  • 802.11a/g wireless networking

  • Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy

  • Windows XP Pro

  • MS Works Suite 2006 (It was only $30, and it comes with a full version of Word)

We also grabbed a wireless pocket router while we were at it to make things easier at LAN parties.

Wow, that's not bad at all! Quite the contrary, you could even run Vista there ;D

Works comes with Word? o.0
I beleive I have Works in my laptop's Windows partition, I'll have to check it out

Yes, these machines are advertised as "Vista-ready". Whether or not _we_ are ready for Vista is another question entirely.

The latest version of Works includes Word now - which is a huge improvement from the lame word processor that used to come with it. For only $30 it seemed like a decent price.

That's very cool :)
Microsoft offered standalone Words to the government of a German city a couple of years ago if they adopted Windows as their official OS. Even though that, and even though it was a bit more expensive, they went with SuSE Linux

Now that I'll be working in Power Point I should probably switch to office =P (I did tell them I don't use office and in particular Power Point I haven't used since like 1999 or so)
So I took the first step and together with my Vista beta I also downloaded the Office 12 Beta
