It is a very pleasant, if slightly breezy day in the city, so I decided to take my lunch outside and listen to the live band playing in the courtyard by our building. The musicians were competent and the music was inoffensive. The band consisted of two guitarists, a keyboardist and a drummer. The two guitarists (male and female) had very American Idolesque voices, and they alternately sung duets, or traded off singing in each song. Typically he would sing a verse, then she would sing a verse, then they would sing duet on the chorus. The songs themselves were very formulaic generipop; e.g., verse verse chorus, verse verse chorus, instrumental, verse verse chorus chorus [chorus].
It didn't make me want to stab my ears out with an icepick, but neither did it leave me with a driving compulsion to buy the CD that they were plugging between songs. It was this kind of music that makes me appreciate true creativity when I hear it.
