There are 187 steps from the main floor to ours.  One of these days I'm going to take a ruler out there and measure the height of the risers so that I can work out my total vertical distance when I climb to this floor.

Well, if your building uses standard relationships (however, it is a railroad building, and we know how they can play fast and loose with standards. :=3 ), there should be a 11 inch tread and a 7 inch rise.

Using those figures 187*7=1309 inches or 3324.86 cm or 33.24 meters or a little over 109' (109.08333333333333333333333333333' or 109' 1"). Figuring ~10' floor to floor with a bit extra between the first to second floor, that would put you on the 10th floor of your building. :=3

How close am I?

Close - we're on the 9th floor. I'd done some initial calculations based on the assumption that they are a 7" rise, but to my unaided eye it looks like less than 7".

In most buildings this WOULD be the 10th floor, but the 6th floor in this building is half-again as tall as any of the other floors. At risk of revealing just how geeky I am, I counted stairs and stairwells in the building yesterday and noted the figures in a spreadsheet in my PDA as I went.

From the first floor to mine:
