What are they teaching in schools these days?  In a recent phone survey of American adults, only 1 in 1000 could name all five freedoms in the first amendment of the US constitution, but 22% could name all five family members of The Simpsons.

Conclusion: That Homer guy... what an actor!  He cracks me up.  D'oh!

(I challenge any one of my fellow Canucks to name even a single item in our Charter of rights - without using the word "notwithstanding".)

So I won't try your challenge, but before I go read the article, I believe the five freedoms protected in the first amendment are:

Freedom of Speech
Freedom of Association (i.e. "peaceably assemble")
Freedom of Religion
Freedom of Press
Freedom to Petition the Government

Now I'll go read and see if I'm right.

Whew! I don't need to turn in my citizenship card... or something...

I knew the first three off the top of my head, but I can never remember the press or petitions. It is sad that I know more about our neighbours' constitution than I know about our own.

Would it help if you thought of "Freedom of Press" as "Freedom to Read What You Want?" I did a thesis on that once--the point of protecting the press was to give citizens access to adequate information to be informed voters.

Sometimes I wish the founders had worded it that way.

I have no clue what's in the charter of rights. I should at least have a vague idea, but I don't...

You know I dn't think I've ever actually read the charter? Besides I slept through social studies class. The gym teacher taught it.
Still I'm quite sure that we have freedom from discrimination based on gender, race or sexual orientation (that last clause having been added recently).
Probably also freedom to assemble, and the usual freedom of speech and of the press etc.

This is too weird.
I just heard about this on Attack of the Show (a live show on TechTV).
Then, I decided to check livejournal during the commercial, and now I see you posted exactly the same thing.

Weeeeeeird!
