Jan. 12th, 2006 09:22 amI don't know if they are primarily a Winnipeg thing, but according to a friend who recently moved there, you can't get bakudan rolls out in Vancouver. He was enjoying one during a post-Christmas sushi feed, and he casually mentioned that he misses them since he moved to the coast. I sifted through my sushi memories, and though I've come to accept them as standard sushi fare, it occurred to me that I'd never heard of them before I moved out here.
If you are one of the uninitiated who has never chanced to experience one of these rolls, there is what you are missing; a bakudan roll is a spicy tuna maki under a mound of crumbled tempura and topped with hot sauce. It is an altogether lovely blend of flavours and textures. I'm not going to try and claim that it's a uniquely Winnipeg thing because the last time I did that I got back a variety of interesting comments.
"They invented those in Chicago, you know."
"That's the official dessert topping of Sudbury."
"You come Bangkok me love you long time. kk?"
On a somewhat utterly unrelated note, I started an Alliance character in WoW last night. Some of the folks in our guild were lamenting the fact that the Escape Pods (the alliance branch of The Pod People guild) had virtually no active characters. I'm going to try and make it a point to play Weaselmancer (my dwarf hunter) at lease once or twice a week - probably even more once I get Erui levelled up to 50 (she's at 47 now and counting).
