atara was feeling a bit off last night, so I got volunteered to make dinner. While I was working on it (honey/mustard/curry chicken with rice and oriental vegetables), I decided to do a little cleaning around the kitchen. For the most part that involved washing the dishes, and wiping the stove and counter tops. Once supper was in the oven and the dishes were squared away I turned my attention to washing the cat dishes, then on a whim I decided to wash and polish the tea kettle.
We've let the cleaning lapse a bit, and I'll be the first to admit that at times we live one step this side of squalor. Polishing the tea kettle is a small step when you haven't seen the surface of your dining room table in weeks, but somehow the gesture left me feeling a bit more civilized, and the kettle looks damn good. It gleams with a black lustre that it hasn't known in years, and when one stares at it one has to think "How much more black could this be?" and the answer is: "None ... none more black."
(Bonus points to anyone who gets the reference.)

I fill the sink with boiling water, then dump a spoonful of dishwasher-soap powder(the kind used in machines) in it. Leave the pot to soak for a while, and by the time the water has cooled so much that you can safely pick up the pot, it's just about clean by itself...
Of course, by the time I get around to doing this, the pot REALLY needs it...
