My more general observation is that the burgers don't seem half as good as they were back then (say, 15 years ago). I had a fondness for the 1/4lb-er with cheese, but it's unsatisfying now.
A Lick's burger on the other hand, is a fast-food gastronomical masterpiece.
I'm inclined to agree. I've always thought it was my tastes changing, but I definitely remember their burgers being a lot better a few years back.
I think it's that whole "frog in a blender" thing in action. If you start the blades moving really slowly, the frog doesn't notice until it's too late (or am I mixing metaphors again?).
Over the years they have been slowly trimming the quality of the burgers to save money until we get the sorry, greasy things that we have today. If they did it all at once (new Coke anyone?) they'd have an uproar, but if they cut the cost slowly over a few years, nobody notices.
They've brought the McRibs back a couple of times. I also liked the McRibs, so I was really happy the last time they brought them back until I tried them. They were thoroughly vile. I don't know how you can screw up something that's essentially bread and processed meat by-products, but McDonalds found a way.
...McD's had something non-horrific /ever/? Will wonders never cease. [I quite like their milkshakes, but that might just be the insane-amount-of-sugar rush they cause in me talking]
Unfortunately we don't have it in my country any more either. It was a (sadly short-lived) hamburger that McDonalds introduced over here back in the 80s. The McDLT was a variation on the Quarter Pounder with cheese. It came in a Styrofoam container with two compartments. In one side was the bottom half of a Quarter Pounder with the meat and cheese, and in the right side was the top half of the bun with lettuce (real lettuce, not the shredded stuff they put on the Big Mac), sliced tomato, pickles and mayonnaise.
When you go the burger home (or out to your car/bike/sk8tboard, etc) you had to assemble the burger before you ate it. It was messy, but very good.
Now, if you was to talk about their bacon, egg and cheese biscuit, we've got a Mickey D's down the street that's got their breakfast act together :) I'd be stopping there more often on the way to work if they hadn't moved to a new location that's harder to get to, alas.
