I just got off the phone with [livejournal.com profile] atara.  She learned why our regular weekend coffee house was closed a few weeks back when we showed up there for our regular group meet; it was closed for five days by the health department.  Fortunately it was a comparatively minor offence (malfunctioning dishwasher).  That just means we got a little bonus with our food when we were eating there.

There is a new Chinese restaurant that we had considered trying at some point, but I doubt we'll be stopping in there any time soon: roaches, mice and general filth.  Multiple violations.  Yum.  "Excuse me waiter; my chow mien is moving..."

Every time I walk into a restaurant, they close it down.

Maybe the new restaurant is just a local chapter of the Church of the Flying Spagetti Monster?

*grin*

I don't think we're in Kansas any more, Toto.--Dorothy

In Toronto a few years back there was a major crackdown on restaurant health inspections. I would have counted it as something actually useful that our the ex-mayor Mel Lastman did, except that it was clear case of public relations pandering to try and win the city's bid for the olympics. In any case, all the restaurants had to put a sign in their front window. Green meant things were fine, yellow meant there were problems found and there'd be a follow-up check, and red meant failure. I was living on the edge of the downtown Chinatown and saw mostly green, thankfully. A couple of yellow signs here and there. One Chinese bun place that I loved got a red, though. They re-opened over half a year later and had totally re-designed their interior in the process. But you know what was funny? The cafeteria at Toronto's city hall got a yellow sign. :)
