Lacking sympathy
Jan. 12th, 2021 09:25 amThis has been a freakishly warm winter so far. I understand that other parts of the country are experiencing cold weather now, but that's usually our role. Winnipeg is infamous for its long, brutal winters.
Yesterday when I was out for a walk, a couple of joggers crossed my path who were dressed in shorts and tee-shirts. It was a little chilly for that style of dress, but not by much.
This is the time of year when we typically see daytime highs in the lower double-digits, and overnight lows approaching -40. They are calling for it to hover around freezing today, and get above freezing tomorrow with rain in the evening. This is not normal.

scha·den·freu·de

noun
pleasure derived by someone from another person's misfortune.
I have seen some videos from airports recently of people having meltdowns when they discover that they have been flagged as domestic terrorists and put on no-fly lists. Watching these people crying and throwing tantrums in public while they are dragged off of planes by marshals, or turned away at the boarding counter spurs no sympathy in me. What did they expect to happen? They are people who supported the leaders who brought in the laws that allow the government to take these kinds of actions. They just assumed that these laws would only apply to people of a different skin hue and religion.
Here's a hint: If you decide to join an armed insurrection group who storm the seat of government with the intent of overthrowing an election, you shouldn't expect to just head back home and take the kids to soccer when your initial uprising fails. Actions have consequences. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Remember all those cynical platitudes y'all have been spouting over the years and it might help you through these coming times.
I don't expect this to be the end of trouble from these neo-confederates, and I would not be surprised if we start seeing more bloodshed in the coming months and years. I would not be surprised to see attacks against governments at the state level as well. Not to excuse other protesters, but storming The Capitol with guns, bombs, and paraphernalia for binding hostages really puts a few broken windows into perspective. All I can do is wish you all the best, hope for your continued safety, and be thankful that I live on the other side of an international border from it.
On a side note, the government up here is making noises about classifying groups like Proud Boys as domestic terrorists and handling them as such. Do it.
I got out too late to catch the hoar frost at its peak, but it was still reasonably pretty.
