I took today off work to meet a guy from the phone company who was supposed to show up sometime between 8 and noon. He showed up at 11:55 - just under the wire. I thought that he was going to check the lines - at least that's what they told me he was going to do. What he did was take our old Nortel modem and replace it with a different brand. He then checked both phones to make sure that I had line filters in place (I did) and then he tipped his hat and rode off into the sunset.
... and the moment his truck was out of sight our connection died again.
I began running some tests so that I could give them more specific details about when the connection died, and I noticed that it summarily barfed the moment I started to chew up significant bandwidth. Hm. That was something new. Before it was just random, but now I could make it puke on demand. Playing a hunch, I began swapping out cables again. None had any effect until I swapped out the one running from the modem to the wall, and suddenly the connection stabilized. I changed out the cable at about 12:30 this afternoon and the connection has not hiccoughed once at our end. Even better, with new new modem our downloads are pouring through at 3x the speed.
It's a bit early to be popping the champagne corks yet, but I'm hopeful. When the repair guy was here he said, "You're just down the street from the switching station. You shouldn't be having this kind of connection problems." As luck would have it, the connection had died again just before he got here so I could show him that it wasn't just my imagination.
"There, see? Orange light. No connection. That's what it's been doing to us."
(On a side note, thanks to
atara for introducing me to this cute icon meme.)
